New Digital Collage I created today......

This is a print of a digital collage created 06/14/2010 in reaction to Republicans in the state of Arizona that are considering introducing legislation that would deny birth certificates to children born in Arizona to parents who are not legal US citizens.
Such legislation would appear to violate the 14th Amendment of the Constitution, which states that all persons born in the United States are citizens of the United States. The chief supporter of denying birth certificates to the children of immigrants is Republican lawmaker Russell Pearce.

Image will be printed on an 8x10 glossy print with wide white border on top and bottom. Image will be numbered, signed by Miriam Martinez Zapata, dated and numbered (1-25) in back. The image you see is low resolution and has a watermark. The print you receive will be in high resolution and will not have a watermark. A copy of the article accompanies the work.

Thanks for reading.

Arizona State Senator To Target ‘Anchor Babies’ Next? (written by by Colby Hall, May 21st, 2010) Arizona’s controversial new immigration law may be going to the next level. According to a local news report, emails released by State Senator Russell Pearce reveal a rather stunning claim to his supporters: “I intend to push for an Arizona bill that would refuse to accept or issue a birth certificate that recognizes citizenship to those born to illegal aliens, unless one parent is a citizen.” Children born in the US to illegal immigrants are often referred to as “anchor babies” a derogatory reference to the role of a naturalized child that may facilitating legal immigration for the child’s parents.

Appearing to use the Freedom for Information Act, Phoenix local news reporter Morgan Loew obtained various emails from Arizona State Senator Pearce>. An email to supporters reveals Pearce’s desire to overturn (or at least make exception to) the 14th amendment, which basically states that any baby born in the United States is automatically a U.S. citizen. Its far to early to determine whether this effort will garner the support of Arizona constituents, but it is an indication that in some circles of Arizona, there is strong belief that the current law is not strong enough to deter illegal immigrants.
