Is a Religion Ever Right To Outlaw Love?

Anyone who knows me personally or through this blog knows I am an avid supported of the Palestinian cause. I try to read other blogs and independent news reels about this issue because I so very much feel they've have had to endure so much suffering and continue to do so today. In my readings I ran across a blog called Diary of a Muslim Girl and in her most recent post she mentioned how there is a gay rights group in her university with one Muslim member. She ends with sharing that for "a Muslim to actually go and join the group and promote homosexuality while doing so is something that seems a bit iffy" for "homosexuality is condemned in Islam."

While I greatly appreciate her candor and openness for discussion, I was appalled to read the comments that followed which went along the lines of didn't he know it's not okay or some comment on how watered down the religion has become. The author herself further clarified by saying, "I am completely against homosexuality as well and I am disgusted by it."

Let's look at this a bit clearer. I always find it interesting that the people that have the most intensely negative feelings about gays (or any group for that matter) have never even associated with anyone from that group personally. I say this because to come out and say, "disgusted" is a bit strong. If I were to say, " I am disgusted at ________ (fill in your group here) " that would seem strange too. Wouldn't it?

I can only shed light on my personal views on the purpose of religion and/or spirituality in my life. But I strongly believe that if it's outcome is hatred, separation and a general "warrior" approach to the true nature of humanity...Then I'd dare say it's being used to separate, and therefore not served right. I understand that in the great spectrum of all the wonderful religions of the world there are some that may be more prescriptive in nature than others....do this, not this, no to that, boys here, girls here...etc. But no matter how prescriptive our religion may be, shouldn't our instinctual ideas and inner voices of what is truly important, right and solid also play even a small role in determining right from wrong? or are we to just be on automatic for the rest of our lives. If so, then why give us free will, why give us reasoning?

In my heart,  love can never be bad; no matter what color, or gender, size....love is love is love is love.

Now if you want to fight evil and stand for some good, there are some truly dark evils out there for you to tackle...and gays are not one of them at all. For example, I saw this show on Oprah months ago about child molesters who rape children as young as 3-years old and write manuals for other molesters to do the same and publish them online. Every time I think back to what I saw and heard on that show I tremble in my deepest core to think people like that exist. I also saw a show called I Survived where a woman lived to tell of her repeated savage stabbing and beating by three teenagers. People filled with hate and rage are out there and should our focus not be on them? or on how to not raise sociopaths such as these in our society? These are the true haters, for lack of another better word.  On a more powerful yet subtle level, poverty too is an evil.  When people are desperate and without the bare basics, a lot of suffering can come out of it.

My question is......in religion/spirituality, can our own interpretation or deeply instinctual ideas come to play?  I think spirituality should ultimately serves my own inner personal  search for god. I also think this argument may go any direction for it all depends on whether you feel the sacred is out there to attain or already within us. I feel it's within us......god is in me and everyone, and as long as love is there to shine the light, it can't be bad.

My Shift in Food Thought......Soup to the rescue!

The soup craze began when I started to get a little sick, was again addicted to coffee or fearing the dreaded "coffee headache" and was not able to wear my favorite ring. I realized then I needed to start taking care of myself more. I've always been more instinctual when trying to figure out what is right for my health. You will never catch me memorizing, and following to the letter someone else's idea of how to be healthy. I think ultimately it's trust thing. I do not trust others more than myself in terms of what is good for ME.

Infecting Others with my Fiskars Puncher Obsession

Being the only art teacher at my school, I led a Professional development workshop last week for my participating teachers. They used Fiskar Punchers to make simple shape cutouts and create abstract collages on 8"x8" colored paper. Will post pictures of their final pieces later, and once I get permission.

Just Finished Another Recycled Paper Abstract Collage

As you all know by now, I am obsessed over these Fiskars punchers. Nora (1.5) and I sat watching the 3rd season of America's Next Top Model as we punched out all these circles from magazines I had laying around the house.  You can find this and other collages at my online store on Etsy.com.

I love turning garbage and turning it into "treasure".  I got infected with the green-earth bug ever since I met my midwife, Susan,  who was absolutely obsessed with reusing, and  recycling. It pains my heart to see things that are perfectly still functioning get thrown out. With my work, I wish to bring awareness to the beauty that still lives in items we never think twice about throwing away.

Which Matter More.... Our Children or Our Country?

Here's a little of the article found at http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,502525,00.html

DAVIDSON, N.C. — When Lisa Pagan reports for duty Sunday, four long years after she was honorably discharged from the Army, she'll arrive with more than her old uniform. She's bringing her kids, too.
"I have to bring them with me," she said. "I don't have a choice."

Pagan is among thousands of former service members who have left active duty since the Sept. 11 attacks, only to later receive orders to return to service. They're not in training, they're not getting a Defense Department salary, but as long as they have time left on their original enlistment contracts, they're on "individual ready reserve" status— eligible to be recalled at any time.

Soldiers can appeal, and some have won permission to remain in civilian life. Pagan filed several appeals, arguing that because her husband travels for business, no one else can take care of her kids. All were rejected, leaving Pagan with what she says is a choice between deploying to Iraq and abandoning her family, or refusing her orders and potentially facing charges.

Then she hit on the idea of showing up Sunday at Fort Benning, Ga., with her children in tow.

"I guess they'll have to contact the highest person at the base, and they'll have to decide from there what to do," Pagan said. "I either report and bring the children with me or don't report and face dishonorable discharge and possibly being arrested. I guess I'll just have to make my case while I'm there."

"Usually the only way that someone can get out of the deployment or get out of the military due to a family hardship is if they get into a situation where the kids will be put into foster care," Tarantino said.

Master Sgt. Keith O'Donnell, an Army spokesman in St. Louis, said earlier that
"The Army tries to look at the whole picture and they definitely don't want to do anything that jeopardizes the family or jeopardizes the children," O'Donnell said. "At the same time, these are individuals who made obligations and commitments to the country."

Just recently I saw a show on Oprah where she did a live video interview with  a soldier in Iraq who's also single mother. The very first thought that went through my mind was, "you're that child's only parent and you are in Iraq; what if something happens to you?, does she not matter?".  I did not want to judge a parent yet from my own feelings as a mother, I would never willingly be able to leave my children to become a soldier. My children come first.  I would die for them, but not in a war.
Now, today I read the article above about this mother who was still contracted as a reservist yet started a family never thinking she's be redeployed. She's now married and has 2 toddlers. I am at a loss of words when I read stuff like this and ask myself, "where is the common sense in all this?".  For this poor mother to even be worried about doing time or possibly having her kids taken away to the foster system so she could meet her obligations to her "country" makes me enraged. Aren't those kids also part of "our country?".  Do their lives not matter?
I will be writing a handwritten letter to a commander at Fort Benning tonight asking them to reconsider deploying her.
